Safe in the Sun: Designing a Versatile Summer Wardrobe

Summer in the Philippines has begun, bringing scorching sun, endless outdoor adventures, and the challenge of dressing your toddler for the summer heat. We all know that struggle is real because of the many considerations you have to make just to make them comfortable throughout the day. As temperatures rise, it’s important to think beyond fashion and focus on keeping your little one cool, comfortable, and safe. Did you know that babies, especially newborns, are more susceptible to hyperthermia and heat-related skin problems, such as prickly heat? They cannot regulate their body temperature as well as adults; thus, dressing them appropriately is key to avoiding overheating and ensuring they stay healthy during the sunny days ahead.

To have the best summer experience yet, let’s dive into the must-know tips for dressing your little one in the hottest season of the year!

Prioritize Breathable, Natural Fabrics

When it comes to our kids’ summer clothes, the fabric matters a lot! Natural fibers like cotton and muslin are the best option, as they let air flow, keeping your kids cool and comfy. Another best fabric option is bamboo because it’s soft, gentle on your baby’s skin, and moisture-wicking. Avoid using clothes made of synthetic materials like polyester as they trap heat and moisture leading to heat rashes that are unpleasant, itchy, and prickly can result in heat rashes and discomfort.

Master the "Layer Plus One" Rule

The “layer plus one” rule is a practice that requires babies to wear one extra layer beyond their current number of worn layers. It is best believed to be a lifesaver when it comes to dressing your kids this summer. If they’re wearing a sleeveless bodysuit, add a light layer over it, maybe a soft, breathable romper. For outdoor activities, let them wear long-sleeve, ultra-thin cotton shirts and full-length pants to protect against UV rays. In this way, you’re ensuring that they’re cool and at the same time shielded from the sun!

Practice Smart Stroller Safety and Skin Safety

Strollers are a go-to for outdoor activities, but do not use blankets as stroller covers. This can create a greenhouse effect, raising the temperature inside the stroller because thin muslin cloth blocks air circulation. Instead, invest in stroller fans, parasols, or sunshades to ensure steady airflow. Aside from these sunshade protection items, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Parents must apply broad-spectrum mineral-based sunscreens to protect their babies' faces, ears, and hands from harmful UV rays. It is important to find a sunscreen specifically meant for babies that is hypoallergenic and safe for babies’ skin, like Beach Hut Babies and Kids Sunblock with SPF50 Mineral Sunscreen Body Lotion. This will keep their delicate skin protected even when they’re in the stroller’s shade.

Check for Overheating – The “Neck Test”

Unlike adults, babies can’t tell us when they’re hot. It’s important to manually monitor their temperature through the “neck test”. It is a technique that requires you to feel the back of their neck or chest for warmth. If it’s sweaty or too hot, they may be overheating, which may be caused by wearing excessive clothing. Avoid checking their temperature in their hands or feet, as they naturally stay cooler than the body’s core.

Maintain cool and cozy summer nights

When the sun sets, the heat can still be a concern, but the right sleepwear can make a significant difference. Choose lightweight cotton swaddles or sleep sacks (0.5 TOG) (Thermal Overall Grade) to keep your baby comfortable at night. Also, consider letting them wear short-sleeve bodysuits for warmer nights. Also, maintain a bedroom temperature between 16 and 20°C to keep your baby cozy, sleep comfortably, and avoid heat stress.

Have a Comfortable Summer Ahead

While it’s tempting to pick cute, stylish outfits, prioritize your child’s comfort over anything else. The right clothes can make a huge difference in how they handle the heat, whether it’s breathable fabrics, smart layering, or just providing the right amount of sun protection. Keep them safe with practical clothing choices and daily sunscreen application. Through these ways, you can worry less that they’ll get uncomfortable in this weather and focus on enjoying all the fun moments this summer.
